    Who He Is

Why Kailash Talreja is regarded as one of the best tailors in India

He doesn't run a production line. He cuts the pattern, calls the fitting, and puts the last stitch in himself.

Kailash Talreja learned tailoring the way it's been taught in his family for three generations — by hand, under someone who'd already spent a lifetime at it. That apprenticeship, carried on from his father and grandfather before him, is the reason clients keep describing him not just as a tailor, but as their tailor.

What separates a good tailor from one people call the best isn't a single skill — it's consistency across decades, a willingness to personally handle the parts most workshops delegate, and a memory for exactly how each client likes to be dressed. That's the standard Kailash Talreja works to, on every commission, whether it's a first suit or a twentieth.

    How He Became a Tailor

Two teachers. Eighteen days. A craft almost skipped.

    A master with one gap

The master tailor behind Sindh Punjab Tailors — Kailash Talreja's grandfather — was a craftsman through and through, but Desi tailoring was all he knew. English cutting, the construction behind a Western suit, wasn't something he could teach his own son.

    Eighteen days, one hour each

Before Kanhaiya Lal Talreja — Kailash's father — could join the family business in the 1960s, his own father sent him to Master Kheldas, then working at Ranken & Company — a legendary British-run tailoring house in Connaught Place, New Delhi, that operated through the Raj and into the post-independence years. Eighteen straight days, one hour a day, was enough for Master Kheldas to teach him English tailoring from the ground up: everything from an undergarment to a full overcoat. He later taught Kailash Talreja directly too — specifically ethnic wear, a category the family business didn't offer until Kailash introduced it after joining in 1988.

    The reluctant return

Kailash Talreja wasn't pushed toward tailoring — his father, who knew exactly how hard the trade was, pushed him away from it. A BCom graduate with distinction, Kailash started his career in sales, at MBD Books. He lasted a year and a half before the family legacy pulled him back — and he's been cutting cloth ever since.

    Learning From Everywhere

The art that knows no boundaries.

When fusible interlining — "French buckram" — first came to India, it was Bharat Bhushan Shah, founder of BB Interlining, who brought it to Delhi. He didn't stop at the material: he brought over the French tailors who'd actually mastered the technique, to train Indian tailors properly rather than let the craft be guessed at. Those tailors, surprisingly to most who heard about it at the time, were all women.

Kailash Talreja trained under them. It's where he arrived at something he's held ever since: craft isn't something that can be gated by gender, caste, or creed. It's pure art, and he's treated it that way from then on — which is also why fused construction is a technique he understands from the source, not secondhand.

It's part of why he's never stopped treating himself as a student. Between Master Kheldas, the French tailors who came through Bharat Bhushan Shah, and everyone since, Kailash Talreja has spent a career learning from senior people rather than assuming he's finished learning. As he puts it: an art like this can never be perfected.

    Our Story

    From Sindh to Delhi.

Kailash Ji's grandfather began tailoring in Sindh, undivided India, in the 1930s. When Partition came in 1947, the family crossed the border with their skills, patterns, and standards intact — and rebuilt from there.

After Partition, the family settles in Delhi and establishes Sindh Punjab Tailors — bringing decades of craft to one of the capital's most storied communities.

    3. Today

      Suit Up by Kailash Talreja

In 2020, the studio moved from Daryaganj into a single room at Kailash Talreja's own residence in Preet Vihar — and never moved back. The belief hasn't changed: a garment made well, to your body, for your occasion, is never just clothing.

    No Showroom. No Sales Floor.

    Just the tailor.

In 2020, Kailash Talreja moved out of the old Sindh Punjab Tailors premises in Daryaganj and set up in a single room at his own residence in Preet Vihar. It was meant to be temporary.

His clients followed him there anyway. Not for the space — there wasn't one to speak of — but for him. When things opened back up, he never went back to a storefront.

That's still how it works today. No showroom to walk through, no sales staff to greet you at the door. You come to Preet Vihar, and Kailash Talreja himself takes your measurements, discusses your cloth, and cuts your pattern. The room is small. The attention is not.

    Delhi, Not London

What Savile Row promises, delivered here.

Savile Row's reputation was never built on the buildings. It was built on tailors who cut for the person in front of them, fitting by fitting, for as long as it took. That's the same standard Kailash Talreja works to — hand-cut patterns, in-person measurement, and a relationship that outlasts any single suit.

Delhi had its own version of that world once. Kailash Talreja's father trained in English cutting under Master Kheldas at Ranken & Company, the legendary British-run tailoring house in Connaught Place — that lineage runs directly into Suit Up by Kailash Talreja today.

    The Difference

You don't need a flight to get it.

A Savile Row commission can mean months on a waitlist and a currency conversion most clients never see the value of. In Delhi, that same standard — hand-cut, personally fitted, one tailor from first measure to final stitch — is a video call, or a short drive to Preet Vihar, away.

    Why Kailash Talreja

    What three generations gets you.

    Pattern On File. For Life.

Your measurements and pattern are kept on file after the first fitting. Every next order is made from that pattern without remeasuring from scratch.

    Both Traditions. One Studio.

Western tailoring and Indian ethnic wear under one roof — suits and tuxedos alongside sherwanis and bandhgalas — cut by the same hand.

    Hand Measurement. Every Time.

Every garment begins with measurements taken in person — never from a size chart, never from a previous order's guess.

    Fittings, Not Guesswork.

Every garment gets at least one trial fitting before final construction. For a sherwani or a heavily embroidered bandhgala, two or three are standard.

    Community
